Scarlet Letter Symposium Feedback

Scarlet Letter Symposium: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly:

Family 1: The Good: Enjoyed the scary story motif. Nice job emphasizing the pink ribbons. Janistie's points really stood out as the most intricate...I very much enjoyed her analysis of the difference between "supernatural" and "emotional" elements.

The Bad: Faith does not equal Hester, YGB does not equal Dimmesdale. It seemed that you guys were forcing the connection between the works, should've focused less on characters. Large points of story missed.

The Ugly: The Video. Left me confused about why some elements were included. Strange.

Family 2: The Good: Good flow of information between Kessiah and Dan. This is a difficult topic, but you guys kept at it and avoided the huge pieces of misinformation that other groups fell victim to. I was impressed with Victoria.

The Bad: Visuals did not bring any excitement to the proceedings. That's what they should do. Hunter avoided saying "Van Goethe." Transcendentalism's role could've been strengthened by a better representation of ideas and summary. You recognized how prevalent it is around my classroom, you should've been equally concerned with getting its descriptions right.

The Ugly: Botched difference between romanticism and transcendentalism.

Family 3: The Good: Loved the puppets...at first. Mike. His presentation was knowledgeable. He is very well spoken and has an ease of manner that made your presentation work. Love the sad faces on the puppets...nice touch.

The Bad: Didn't need all those puppeteers. Zinn is history, not literature.

The Ugly: The puppets just seemed to hit each other...no matter what the description was. By the end, the puppets seemed like a missed opportunity, because you obviously put a lot of time into creating them, but did not put a lot of time into deciding how their actions would actually accentuate your points.

Family 4: The Good: Everything! Loved "Wheel of Shame." Finally! A presentation that was willing to be entertaining as well as informative. The shaming examples were excellent. It was a little silly, but did not de-rail into mayhem. Really enjoyed your thoroughness. You were willing to put REAL thought and research into modern issues. Presentation was very visual and stayed interesting. Really liked the tie-in to world culture, Holocaust, etc. I was a big fan of bringing in the press for 21st Century shaming -- excellent call -- showed nice insight and critical analysis. Molly's exuberance.

The Bad: Nothing.

The Ugly: Not sure I agree that Americans don't really care about it anymore.

Family 5: The Good: The video was cute. Excellent visuals, especially compared to other groups.

The Bad: Explanations generally lacked insight. Left the story feeling flat. Did you guys take more than one take of any of the scenes? It seemed like you weren't deterred by everyone laughing.

The Ugly: Some characters were dressed in period...others were in OHS hoodies...in the same scene.

Family 6: The Good: Loved the Oprah Book Club idea. Sam did a very nice job explaining original sin.

The Bad: Oprah concept seemed to fizzle. I was so hopeful of the presentation being fun and interesting at the beginning, but then just turned into straight talk. Another missed opportunity. Overall, I felt as if the presentation only scratched the surface of the topic. It left me confused about why some ideas were discussed, while others were ignored. At the end, there was only a arbitrary connection to the novel.

The Ugly: Homosexuality? Not sure how that fit in at all, and presentation failed to make a case for why.

Family 7: The Good: Hawthorne Facebook page is an excellent idea. Jordan and Amber made attempts at eye contact.

The Bad: There seems to be very little communication among members of this family. The whole things was manuscript read. Lacked creativity or thought into how to disseminate information. Would an actual Hawthorne Fb page been cooler? Questions exposed massive holes in the information presented.

The Ugly: Identified Hawthorne as a puritan...very large error.

Family 8: The Good: The characters you did hit were done well. I liked the Giles Corey pantomime.

The Bad: Presentation was scattered and misinformed. The vignettes were very hard to follow. Did not give enough credence to the way the girls were initially involved. Wrong about the ending. Misdealt with spectral evidence and hearsay. Many key terms were missing. Failed to ultimately give a sense of WHY the events were so important.

The Ugly: Tituba? Never explained her role, and she was SOOOOO pivotal.

Family 9: The Good: The catalogue/ad campaign motif was very good. The "what they can do for you" idea was good. Props were good. The way you themed the individual presentations was good. Explanations were very thorough and well done. Omee excellent presenter.

The Bad: Overall, you missed what would've been a slam dunk "A" by not including the research, 3rd party element of the presentation. Black man part was very muddled. Were you discussing Dimmesdale? Point was hard to reach.

The Ugly: Calling Hester the "w" word over and over became overkill. It was obvious that at one point you were looking to shock, then just fell in love with saying it aloud.
