In a brief essay, approximately two pages, please craft a response to the above question.
• Perhaps you are a first generation American (like me) and feel more aligned with a home country and culture (unlike me).
• Perhaps you consider yourself a hyphenated American (African-American, Italian-American, Latino-American Muslim- American) and have a unique perspective to share.
• Maybe you moved to this country from another, but you grew up in a culture that preached assimilation.
• Maybe you have relatives who are war veterans. Maybe you have relatives who are currently serving in the armed forces, and that has dictated your Americanism.
• Maybe you consider yourself 100% American ready to chant USA at the first opportunity. Tell me about that.
• Maybe you are extremely cynical or critical of American values, practices, etc, and this affects your patriotism, or lack thereof.
• Maybe something else…
I suggest you go about this essay this way:
1. First think about how you would answer the question.
2. Try to summarize your answer in one sentence. This one sentence (or your thesis) may be how you start your essay. Consider the rest of the first paragraph to act as a hook, something that will interest your reader, but also provide focus.
3. Show, don’t tell! It’s the CARDINAL RULE of good writing! Do not break it.
4. Use the end of the essay (last paragraph or so, to discuss what might happen to change your sense of belonging here?
