Not only is he unfair but from what I have been reading, what he is doing is unconstitutional. And I know a lot of people already dislike him, so why not do a recall on the governor before he does some irreversible damage. This article gives you some idea of what I’m talking about: http://blog.nj.com/njv_paul_mulshine/2010/04/sunday_column.html
im pretty sure i already commented on this but, teachers are feeding their students biased information & we believe them because we trust our teachers. kids need more resources, but every other resource is either a swayed opinion or filtered information. teachers are using their classrooms as political grounds & it shouldnt be like that.
& in essence, isn't such disagreement part and parcel of an educational process and therefore inaccurate of your assessment of bias? This blog is a forum. More people have spoken out in support of the Governor than otherwise. How is that biased? I take never taken offense to your opinions. Mark, Marcel and Rhiannon, just to name a few, have been very vocal in their support of the governor. I have always welcomed the debate. I DO however take offence to the indictment that you are being USED. You have always been encouraged to voice ANY opinion on this blog, and in the classroom. Besides, you have no political clout whatsoever...you don't vote or pay taxes. There is no point to manipulating students. ALL you have is an opinion. You should be happy to have a place to articulate it. We teach government and communication. I think this issue is educationally timely and viable to our curriculum which calls for the direct address of pertinent local and federal issues. Besides, this issue affects students as well as teachers. My class has always been about encouraging you to be active in issues that affect your life, not just this one. If these comments of unfairness were directed at me, I think you are being a bit unfair.
we may not vote or pay for taxes, but there is the petition going around that we CAN sign. we have a say in this budget decision, we can also influence our parents, no matter how small, every opinion counts. & no, that post wasnt directly about you, mr costal, in general i feel, along with my peers, that teachers try to push their opinion on us students. i realize that you allow us to voice our opinion on this blog & in class, so thank you. although, ive come to a personal conclusion that if theres an opinion you dont agree with, you tend to shoot it down. one day in class you completely jumped down one students' throat about them mentioning the teachers' pay & it scared me a little bit. you got pretty dismantled about one persons opinion & thats why im usually uncomfortable about speaking out in class. im saying this with all due respect and crossing my fingers that you dont take this the wrong way. PS-im not upset about the issue going on, just the way people are approaching it.
That's unfair, Liz. The situation you are refering to was a lot more than a student "refering to teacher's salary." That is a very slanted assessment of what happened. The student in question yelled and pointed a finger at me, pretty much screaming out: "I'm glad that teachers' salaries are getting cut! YOU deserve it!" This was not only overly-aggressive and ill-timed, but it was inaccurate. I also felt attacked. I would never put down a student or wish ill of their professions. Please forgive me if I am wrong, but I HAVE never treated any of you that way, nor will I accept being treated that way by a student. That was not an argument about the state of state politics, it was a personal attack. That is why I as you put it, I "shut that student down." The way in which you refer to that incident is an unfair representation of what happens in our class. I have never told a student that his/her opinoin was invalid...EVER! I never will. If you are put-off by the fact that I may disagree with you, then you have forgotten what I told you day one. "This class is about politics. Politics is about issues. I will challenge you. Provoke you, and though you may not always like it, hopefully, you will grow and learn from it. I will make you defend your position so you may more effectively defend your opinions on the exam, in school and in life, " REMEMBER?
I am sorry that this exchange "scared" you out of sharing your opinion. This is not my intention. It is also anti-thetical to my teaching philosophy. For the record...once again...in my class, differing opinions are not only welcomed, they are encouraged.
thanks for the clarification, i suppose we both read each others' comments opposite of the intention. i still believe that students should be exposed to other opinios other than teachers'. & i dont recall the first day of your class cause i wasnt there.
and to think that izzy & andy wanted to kill you in class today. pish-posh, i say. happy mediums DO exist.
As is said by Mr. Costal in almost every class period that involves debate, "We are a Microcosm of America and its strong opinions." I think that no matter who it is in Government, we should support them because they won fairly. If you disagree with anything that is occurring in government, I believe it was Tocqueville who said that government needs to be overthrown every ten years to ensure rights. Do you agree? Voice your opinion to someone who will make a difference. Disagree? Follow the same course of action. Sure it is fun to debate on this blog because Mr. Costal or people whom disagree cant attack you at that moment and you have plenty of time ot collect your thoughts for a comeback but if you want or don't want something to happen then start to make a difference as citizens of the United States.
Anyone disagree with that strenuously long tirade?
Let's say you do reinstate taxes on the wealthy. Guess what's going to happen? The wealthy will leave the state of New Jersey and take their money else where. The millionaires this state has buy things from New Jersey and therefore put their MILLIONS of dollars into our economy. If they get taxed, they leave which then increases the unemployment rate in New Jersey. The carpenters who built the million dollar boats will be out of business, the marinas that store these boats will be out of business, the hundreds of people the millionaries employ will be out of business, and all for what? Society NEEDS the rich just like it needs the poor. If the rich begin to get taxed, then the state is going to be in some serious trouble. Also, why should they be taxed more than the average person? Most of them work really hard to make sure they have nice things. They became lawyers, doctors, or start their own business. Why should the state of New Jersey punish theesm for being successful? This is messed up. We are encouraged in school to do well and be succesful, that way we can have a nice life and live the way we want. If we do work hard and have our dreams of making money come true, we're going to be taxed more? That's ridiculous. I found a few examples that support my point clearly: "1. We should make A+ students give up a letter grade and give it to failing students.
2.We should make our gold medalists carve up their medals and hand out slivers to all the participants.
3.We should make the highest grossing sales person in every sales office, give some of their accounts to the lowest performer.
4. We should make every champion basketball, baseball, football, etc, team give five of their players to the lowest performing team in their league. " I think it's pretty clear how absolutely asinine this is.
I agree with Noelle. Why should people who worked their butts off their whole lives to get achieve these successful careers have to pay for those who didn't work as hard as them?
agreed once again. those people earn the money they have. increasing taxes for only them would break the fairness barrier in the taxation world. to purposely tax more on them would be stealing. the rich should be taxed the same amount that the poor do; bottom line.
the wealthy shouldn't be taxed more heavily. why should they pay more? they WORKED for that money (well, most of them did). When you take away money from the rich through taxes it makes others lose motivation to try and be successful because the more money you make, the more heavily taxed you are. I was listening to a debate on the radio all about Chris Christie and all his cuts he's making and one man in the debate made a VERY good point: yes, these cuts are substantial but they are manageable. Plus, what Christie is doing now may seem unfair but it will help New Jersey and hopefully we will be back on our feet in a couple of years. For now we must figure out ways to deal with it.
Look, whether it's teachers getting their already meager salary cut, or going tax crazy on the wealthy, in the end, the truth is this: someone got screwed over. There is no "alternative". Because whether people like Mr. Costal loses money or the many millionaires with their very non humble abode loses money, someone is going to lose money and someone is going to be pissed while the other person will be slightly relieved and have a slight sense of pity. The best thing we can do is predict the worst possible outcome for those getting screwed over and develop a future to compensate for those loses. Mr. Costal is getting a huge tax cut or whatever from his paycheck? Let him plan right now on how to find a new job if the job he has now is too destroyed for him to work on in the future. I'm not saying it's fair. In this world, nothing is fair. But desperate times, calls for even more desperate measures.
Also Liz, I did not want to kill Costal! I wanted to kill Rachael Lutigen! No one hates her so no one would suspect anyone! The only reason I got caught was I was freaking surrounded by 3 cops, forming the triangle of doom around me. You know, that just reinforces my ideas on how triangles are aggressively evil even more.
Not only is he unfair but from what I have been reading, what he is doing is unconstitutional. And I know a lot of people already dislike him, so why not do a recall on the governor before he does some irreversible damage. This article gives you some idea of what I’m talking about:

What else can the Governor do? Answer that please. It's not fair, yes, but what is a better and more suitable alternative?
ReplyDeleteI urge you guys to post alternative opinions on this blog.
ReplyDeleteBrandon, couldn't he reinstate the tax on the wealthy?
